[Kotei 2009] St. Louis Kotei

For anyone with a short attention span here's the skinny:

The kotei will be held at Diecon 9.

Starts at 9AM Saturday June 6.
Political will be a costume contest.
Winner will receive a custom iPod Touch.

Last year we had a great showing of over 100 people Very Happy

Hope to see more people this year representing the spider as I, myself, will be coming out with all my spidery wrath in order to secure another kotei win for us Twisted Evil

I don't know which round this is, it's not the final Top cut. I also don't know why Oni and SH are differentiated. A pity that we didn't win the political, but I'm having my fingers crossed for Shadowlands kotei victory.

Despite odd trends in my win loss record I'm happy that my standings came out better then last year. I apologize but I had no kimono of my own to wear in order to do anything for the political. If someone could PM me a place I could try to construct one, I would appreciate it and try to bring politics to us next year.

Anyways here's the skinny of my kotei report:

1st Round: Battle Maiden

NOTES:

After five consecutive matches with honor runners, I was finally able to find the flaw in my construction.

(replacing dirty politics with unfortunate incident)

The odd trend that I noticed came from the fact that pure honor runners would knock me aside both because of the lack of honor loss in my fate and not being able to draw a desperate wager to save my life (considering increasing to 2x).

Might as well post my sad sad little mini-report...

I went 4-4, which I don't think is that bad since I've been away from the game for 3-4 months and the deck had only been complete for a day, and had slot fillers for cards I didn't have...

Round 1
Shadowlands Horde (Me) vs. Phoenix Military (with breeder-ish people... they're jockin' our Spidah!)

I get a little gold screwed they get a dude on the board before me, but not enoguh force. I finally get a big oni out and it proves too much trouble for the wimpy phoenix personalities.

Win for me.

Round 2
Me vs. Mantis.

If I was ever scared of a military being faster than me, I'd definately not look forward to Mantis. Lucky for me I get great gold, and he gets a little gold flooded. And even then, he uses his gold in ways that are strange, like bowing holdings to buy just 'The Khan' when he couldve bought the Khan AND a boxable.

I end up having more naval than he does thanks to 3 Umi Bozus heh. Win for me.

Round 3
Me vs. Horde.

If getting bad gold wasnt enough, this guy simply roflstomped me with a chutoburo. Like, 4 provinces with just him. I uh... yeah. He went on to top eight though, so yays.

Loss for me.

Round 4
Me vs. ???

I cant even remember that match lol... All I know is I got Gold Droughted and died.

Loss.

Round 5
Me vs. Spider Breeder.
Drought became Flood. If I would've had people flip in my provinces, I prolly coulda bought all of em. And then more.

Loss.

I go on to lose round 6 to a Dragon Control also built in the last two days, lol.

Round 7. I'm feeling crappy now. But hey, another phoenix military! I can crush them guys right?

Right.

Win.

Round 8.
Me vs. Horde.

Gets me down to 2 provinces early, and when he's bowed out I made my move, barely winning this one. We play suicide after the match for a little while, cool guy.

Win.

So in the end, I forever hate myself for such a failure, being 4-4. My Oni are sad and out of food now, and Tsudo has turned to eating his brethren just to stay alive. But hey, overall it was a fun experience, and in the end Horde won it all, so hells yeah!

So, to those who don't know me Nate. or Nathan Hedrick, there ain't no "n" in there. Some of you know me most of you don't. I am not an oni bandwagoner so please don't put me in that category. I love them because I want to be one. I just pulled one out for Shadowlands/Spider @ the St Louey Kotei. I will post a decklist after the Chicago area Kotei. . Thank you

I am to lazy and slow to remember details, so for those names I forget, I am the dumb one with the bad memory. You are all special memorable people who deserve better then to be forgotten by me. On the other hand...

The Greatest and Luckiest Shadowlands deck of that day:

Round one: Hot maw on maw action. vs Colson
Someone went first, Winter Warfare hit and screwed up everything, I had to have Kayomasa sanzoed to sleaze a province and then he forgets shoot-a-burrito has to have more force then my gold cost and dies trying to take 3 provinces. No rets for either side is good? 1-0

Round 2: Dragon magistrate honor/dishonor control out of tetsu kama mura. vs ? (sorry)
Well, I have all the foils to him "unexpected"ly making my people "betray" me and I don't care about getting dueled. Basically I got oni's with attachments and could take provinces. Yeah. 2-0

Round 3: Phoenix military City of tears vs ? (lo siento)
I got naval, his got hk'ed. Nuff said. 3-0

Round 4: Oni hotness, again. vs Ian (PS I am #1 so far)
I went first! I see one peep, Nairu (so bad by himself!) on turn 5 just to get double hk'd. Stupid Khan screwing up my gold scheme early. I bought "it" to stop Ian from getting it and everything went dark after that. I hate the Khan. 3-1

Round 5: Oni again. Starting to get annoying. Only 9 counting me! (that is ALOT) vs Domotai
I get a poor money start. He gets HKs and I do not. Doh.3-2

Round 6: Seriously, Oni AGAIN. From my playgroup, vs Josh
Always fun to travel to play people you play all the time at home. He played oni, kinda, cause of me. Apparently Josh has never beat me in a game. Ever. I feel bad but the trend continues. No finals for him. 4-2.

Round 7: Not Oni. Crab Razor follower but not Salman crab. Another of my playgroup. vs Matt
I used to own Matt but like the crabs he loves to emulate through his steadfast stubornness to play NOT crab, our matchups have turned much more even. I will be glad when this free follower crap is gone from the environment. He sees one follower all game. Peace. 4-2 (2-0 for removing any chance of others in playgroup getting to finals)

Round 8: Lion Ancestors vs John (my playgroup, of course)
John is pretty new to the game (one year-ish) but is one win from probably finals, and deserves it. I get out an Umi Bozu who proceeds to rock his world. He scoops when he flips 3 moneys and has a dead-ish hand with 2 non tacts. and my 3 guys. Make finals, couldn't feel worse about getting there if I tried 6-2 (3-0 to kick playgroup out of finals shot)

Finals

Roud 1 (one game) vs Domatai again. Rematch of oni. #5 is alive. I go first.
So we both get HKs, he gets people without actions and some damn dirty rats. I make some stupid play mistakes from playing to many casual games (sanzo dead guy etc) but in the end he has little to do against guys who do stuff.

Round 2 vs Mantis attachment stuff vs Mark
I think this was Marks first finals so congrats to him. We try to wait for his bro since our last games way outpace the others (honor on honor, blech), but he is to slow and we just play. He has some money issues and he learns how onis are mean and move around some. There are lots of cards that kill my guys. His deck doesn't show him enough. I win both games.

Final vs the mantastic Nicholl piloting Crane honor duel out of Kyuden Kyotei.
So many people hovered over our games I got a little claustrophobic and I am pretty sure I cheated. Luckily none of judges or the 15 people see so... I pull out a couple of wins with a super nairu. Gotta love 6 province strength. I'm pretty sure he had some people problems but "whatever". Stupid honor gaining. Good games Chris. Real nail-bitters.

So Onis are freakin da bomb. Each one is house and apparently alot of people think they are good. I won cause I had some great luck and some wacky match ups. Sorry to my playgroup, but I just wanted it more (I am such a DICK)

Thanks for the good Kotei Frank and company. Props all around. Everyone was really nice. Except Domotai who wouldn't let me cheat.

PPS Just today I noticed I was running a 41 dynasty/42 fate deck. Ooops. Just goes to show that 40 /40 is not the end of it all (wow did I get lucky)
